Considering the tectonic shifts playing out in the old and new worlds, the rise of new fundamentalism with its consequent appetite for glorious places of worship, and even the allure of the new ivory tower, there is a renewed appetite for this form of expression.

Similarly, architects, developers and other captains of Industry hope that the ubiquitous office, residential tower, airport or even shopping mall will be "iconic". Is this a vain edifice complex, Monumentalism gone wild? Or is it a reflection of our very innate human desire to mark place and time?
